Storm

Psychological (Freud)

A storm in a dream often mirrors churning affects and an inner conflict that breaks into consciousness with full force. Its raging can voice the fear of a change that shakes the familiar balance of the soul.

Oriental reading

In Oriental-Islamic dream interpretation, a violent storm most often heralds unrest, fear or a passing affliction, its severity matching the force of the wind. If it quickly subsides, this points to a crisis that will soon pass.

European folk (dream-book)

In the old folk dream-book, a storm is a forerunner of quarrel and sudden discord coming into the house: a fierce wind foretells strife within the family or wicked gossip from the neighbours. If it tears off roofs and topples trees, it warns of a loss or of news that throws everything into confusion. But when the weather settles, says the country saying, then after the quarrel reconciliation and quiet will soon return.

Common dream scenarios

Storm at sea

A storm churning the sea mirrors an emotional crisis threatening to throw your life's vessel off course. Traditionally an omen of hardship in travel or livelihood; psychologically the surge of deep, long-suppressed feelings rising to flood you.

Storm uprooting trees

A storm tearing up and felling trees classically announces the toppling of the powerful or sharp losses in family and property. Psychologically the firm supports of your life are being shaken, yet what is torn loose was often no longer deeply rooted anyway.

Sandstorm in the desert

A sandstorm that robs your sight points to confusion and disorientation in a phase where truth and path are veiled from you. Traditionally a sign of rumors or deceptive influences; psychologically an emotional storm that leaves you groping blindly until it settles.

Storm that passes over

When the storm rages but then passes and leaves calm behind, the dream promises that an affliction is only temporary and you will outlast it. Traditionally consolation after fear; psychologically the knowledge that even the fiercest affects peak and then subside.
