Moon

Psychological (Freud)

In depth psychology the moon embodies the hidden, receptive side of the soul: intuition, dreams and the shifting emotional life in its phases. It often mirrors the maternal-feminine principle within and the nocturnal world of the unconscious.

Oriental reading

In Oriental-Islamic interpretation, a full, radiant moon is a good omen for a person of high standing, beauty, leadership or glad tidings. An eclipsed or falling moon, by contrast, may point to grief, decline or the fading of a lofty position.

European folk (dream-book)

In old folk belief a bright full moon in a dream foretells fresh news and a happy turn in matters of the heart, and many a grandmother read it as the sign of a wedding soon to come. A waning moon, or one veiled by clouds, was held to warn of false friends and whispered gossip behind your back. Should a maiden dream of the moon, a letter from afar is said to be on its way.

Common dream scenarios

Full moon

A radiant full moon is the most auspicious lunar omen in Oriental-Islamic tradition: prestige, fulfilment and a high point in the dreamer's life are drawing near. Psychologically it signals that something long ripening within you has now become whole and visible – a feeling, a longing or a feminine power steps into the light.

Crescent moon

A waxing crescent promises a fresh start, a young undertaking that still wants to grow – in Islamic tradition a sign of birth, faith and a blessed beginning. Psychologically you stand at the outset of an inner process: trust time, for what looks small is in the act of becoming.

Blood moon / red moon

A blood-red or eclipsed moon warns, in older readings, of unrest, a strained phase or a rift within your closest circle – a time when the familiar wears a strange face. Psychologically, suppressed anger or an emotional crisis is surfacing, no longer willing to stay hidden.

Two moons in the sky

Two moons in the sky point to being torn between two paths, two people or two sides of your own heart – the soul holding two truths at once. Traditionally it can mean divided authority or a decision you are not yet willing to make; psychologically you are wrestling to unite your inner opposites.
