Psychologically the father in a dream stands for internalised authority, the superego and the standards against which we measure ourselves. His appearance may touch a wish for recognition as much as old rivalry or a longing for protection and clear guidance.
Oriental reading
In the Oriental and Islamic tradition the father points to protection, support and upright counsel; to see him kindly promises aid and the success of one's undertakings. An angry father, by contrast, is often understood as a sign of shortcomings the dreamer ought to make amends for.
