A stranger

Psychological (Freud)
Psychologically a stranger often embodies a hidden, as-yet-unknown part of the self, a split-off trait, or a repressed desire. How we meet them, with curiosity, fear, or attraction, reveals our stance toward what remains unlived and unrecognised within us.
Oriental reading
In the Oriental and Islamic tradition a stranger is often a herald of unexpected news, new acquaintances, or an approaching change; a friendly stranger usually promises gain and good tidings. A threatening or hostile unknown figure, by contrast, counsels caution against hidden adversaries.
European folk (dream-book)
The old dream-book sees in a stranger the herald of the unforeseen: soon a piece of news, a traveller, or an unlooked-for turn will knock at your door. Should the stranger seem kindly, he promises a happy chance; should his look be dark, folk belief bids you beware of false promises.
Common dream scenarios
A friendly stranger
A warm, approachable stranger heralds good news or a helpful new acquaintance in the Oriental reading. Psychologically he embodies an unlived, likeable side of yourself that is pressing to surface. The encounter invites you to open up to new people and possibilities.
A threatening stranger
A menacing or pursuing stranger traditionally warns of an unexpected difficulty or a person you should not trust. Psychologically he embodies a split-off, feared part of yourself that you cannot yet accept. The fear in the dream reveals how strongly this part demands attention.
Falling in love with a stranger
Falling in love with a stranger in a dream points to a longing for the new and for a side of life that is missing in waking hours. Psychologically you project unlived qualities — passion, freedom, depth — onto an unknown figure. Traditionally it promises a happy turn in matters of the heart.
A stranger knocking at the door
A stranger knocking at the door is, in the Oriental tradition, a messenger of news or an opportunity about to reach you. Psychologically a repressed part of you is knocking at the threshold of consciousness, asking to be let in. Whether you open or hesitate reveals your readiness for change.
