Baby

Psychological (Freud)

Psychologically the baby embodies a new and still tender part of the self, a budding project, or a longing for innocence and a fresh start. At the same time it can mirror one's own neediness and vulnerability that calls for attention and care.

Oriental reading

In Oriental and Islamic interpretation a baby is mostly a good sign of joy, blessing and the end of worries, and sometimes of unexpected provision. A crying child or one that must be carried, however, may point to a burden or responsibility soon awaiting the dreamer.

European folk (dream-book)

The old dream-book holds a baby a fortunate sign: it heralds luck in the house, a fresh beginning, or glad news, and in some lore even a birth among kin. Yet if the little one cries, folk belief warns of small cares and labours that must be borne patiently for a while.

Common dream scenarios

A laughing baby

A laughing, joyful baby is in both Islamic and Oriental reading distinctly auspicious: joy, blessing and the end of worries are at hand. Psychologically it shows that a new part of life or a venture is thriving in good health. The dream encourages you to trust what is beginning.

A crying baby

A crying baby points to a neglected need — yours, or that of a tender matter calling for more care. Psychologically an immature, vulnerable part of you is making itself heard after being ignored. Traditionally the dream warns you not to put off a pressing matter any longer.

Giving birth to a baby

Giving birth to a baby in a dream traditionally announces the start of something new — a project, a life phase, or abundant blessing. Psychologically you finally bring a creative force or a long-cherished wish into the light. Men and the childless dream this too, as an image of inner birth.

An abandoned baby

Finding an abandoned baby mirrors a part of you that feels unloved or alone. Psychologically a young, protection-needing self is asking to be accepted, having been short-changed in daily life. Traditionally the dream urges you to take up a neglected duty or relationship again.
