U dubinskoj psihologiji nož često daje oblik potisnutoj agresiji ili oštrom porivu da se preseče veza koja je postala zagušljiva. Njegovo sečivo jednako može odražavati odluku koja sazreva u sanjaču, želju da se čisto preseče unutrašnja zapletenost.
Orijentalno tumačenje
U orijentalno-islamskom tumačenju snova, u duhu Ibn Sirina, nož obično označava snagu, zaštitu i vernog pomagača ili slugu. Oštar, čist nož nagoveštava ostvarena prava i stečenu moć, dok tup ili slomljen nož ukazuje na slabost u sporu.

Folk belief holds the knife in a dream to be a sign of strife: it foretells quarrel, dispute and parting, for a knife 'cuts friendship in two.' A bright, sharp blade warns of an open exchange of words or a treacherous foe; a rusty or blunt one of vexation within the family. To give a knife as a gift has long been an ill omen that severs a bond, and so one lays a coin beside it to turn the mischief away.
