Hleb odražava najosnovniju čežnju za hranom i sigurnošću, često nesvesnu žudnju za ranom majčinskom utehom i zadovoljenjem prvobitnih potreba. Može izražavati i želju da se sopstvena sredstva za opstanak drže u sopstvenim rukama i da se čovek nikada ne oseti bespomoćno uskraćenim.
Orijentalno tumačenje
U orijentalno-islamskom tumačenju, hleb označava poštenu zaradu, blagoslov i sigurno izdržavanje; topao, čist hleb nagoveštava blagostanje i dobru, blagoslovenu godinu. Buđav ili pokvaren hleb, nasuprot tome, upozorava na oskudicu ili nepošteno stečenu zaradu, kako se beleži u tradiciji Ibn Sirina.
