Depth psychology sees the car as the dreamer's life-path and the question of who steers it: the conscious ego or alien drives. Sitting at the wheel reflects self-determination, while failed brakes, the passenger seat or a crash point to loss of control and impulses left ungoverned.
Oriental reading
In Oriental and Islamic interpretation the vehicle points to one's standing, trade and progress in one's affairs. A smooth ride heralds advancement and a blessed journey, whereas a breakdown or accident is read as delay and a setback in the undertaking.
European folk (dream-book)
In the newer folk dream-book the car takes the place of cart and team, and signifies the running of one's own affairs. To drive along briskly and safely foretells swift progress and a fortunate journey or message; but to break down, lose your way, or come to a collision is the folk omen of obstacles, of a quarrel along the road, and a warning not to leave your fortune in another's hands.

Sitting at the wheel yourself shows that you steer your life consciously and decide your own direction. A calm, secure drive promises, in Oriental reading, progress in your affairs and good standing. You hold the control in your own hands.
Car accident
An accident in the dream warns of a setback, a rash move or losing control over a venture. Psychologically you fear veering off your life-path or overreaching. It is a call to slow down before something breaks.
Car being stolen
If your car is stolen, you fear losing your independence, your status or control over your path to others. Something or someone is steering where you should steer yourself. Ask who is taking the direction out of your hands right now.
Car with no brakes
A car that no longer brakes mirrors the feeling that your life is running out of control and you can no longer halt a development. Drives or circumstances carry you faster than you would like. It urges you to consciously pause and regain the steering.
