Psychological (Freud)
A book points to the need to read and understand one's own life and may denote a closed chapter or a guarded secret of the soul. Opening it or searching within it often mirrors the wish for self-knowledge and for answers hidden in the unconscious.
Oriental reading
In Oriental-Islamic interpretation the book stands for knowledge, wisdom and the destiny allotted to a person; receiving a book in the right hand is held to be a good omen of guidance and well-ending affairs. A closed or unreadable book points to hidden knowledge or an outcome not yet revealed.
European folk (dream-book)
In folk belief a book in a dream is a message from fate: to open it and read within foretells important news or a letter from afar. A fine new book promises honour and glad tidings, while a torn or dusty one is the omen of forgotten duties and an old quarrel that will be dragged back into the light.
Common dream scenarios
Receiving a book as a gift
In Oriental-Islamic reading a gifted book announces knowledge, good counsel or a piece of life-wisdom reaching you from outside. Psychologically you are accepting an insight you have not yet granted yourself. Notice who hands you the book, for they point the way.
An old book
An old, yellowed book points to inherited knowledge, your origins and the wisdom of ancestors. It may invite you to reread and finally understand a long-closed chapter of life. Buried memories are seeking the light.
A closed book
The closed book stands for a guarded secret, hidden knowledge or an area of life still sealed to you. Something in you is not yet ready to be read. It is up to you whether you open it or let it rest.
Reading in a book
If you read in the dream, you are seeking orientation and an answer to an open question in your life. Oriental interpretation promises clarity and an understanding of your own destiny. If you can decipher the script, insight is near; if it stays blurred, you lack the maturity for it yet.
