U dubinskoj psihologiji zmija često stoji za potisnute nagone i seksualnost, dok njeno presvlačenje kože obeležava unutrašnji preobražaj. Može da utelovi i skriveni strah ili sukob sa kojim se sanjar još nije otvoreno suočio.
Orijentalno tumačenje
U orijentalno-islamskoj tradiciji po Ibn Sirinu, zmija najčešće označava skrivenog neprijatelja ili zavidnu osobu u blizini. Za onoga ko je ubije kaže se da zadobija prevlast nad protivnikom.
