Lion

Psychological (Freud)

In depth psychology the lion embodies the powerful, commanding side of the self and courage, yet also the raw, dominating rage the ego fears. Confronting it may mirror a reckoning with a superior father or authority figure.

Oriental reading

In oriental-Islamic dream interpretation the lion usually stands for a powerful ruler, a stern sultan, or a fearsome enemy. One who overcomes or tames it is said to prevail over a mighty person or win their favor.

European folk (dream-book)

Old superstition reads the lion in a dream as an encounter with a mighty lord or a high patron. If he approaches in peace, one may hope for the favour of a great man and for honour in the village; but if he roars in anger, it foretells strife with someone stronger or the envy of neighbours. Whoever masters the lion, so the old folk say, shall turn a hard adversary into a friend and rise to high standing.

Common dream scenarios

Attacked by a lion

Being attacked by a lion warns, in the oriental reading, of pressure from a powerful adversary, a stern ruler, or an illness that falls upon you. Psychologically an overwhelming affect - rage, fear, craving - is assailing you and asks to be consciously mastered.

Fighting a lion

To wrestle a lion and overcome it signifies victory over a strong opponent or a hard trial - a powerful rise. Psychologically you are confronting your own raw inner part and integrating its strength rather than being ruled by it.

Tame lion

A tame, peaceful lion promises, in the old reading, the favor of someone powerful, protection by a strong figure, or an authority well-disposed toward you. Psychologically your own power and anger have been calmed and made serviceable: sovereignty without violence.

Running from a lion

Running from a lion traditionally indicates that you are escaping the power of someone stronger or a threat - rescue, but at the price of retreat. Psychologically you are avoiding a great force of your own, or a fear you do not yet dare to confront.
