Falling in a dream often voices the sense of losing control or no longer feeling solid ground in waking life. In depth psychology it may hide a repressed wish to let go, experienced at the same time as a fear of one's own surrender.
Oriental reading
In Oriental interpretation, falling is often read as a sign of a setback in rank, reputation, or an undertaking. Yet landing from a great height unharmed is held by some to be a good omen of surviving a danger intact.
European folk (dream-book)
Country lore reads falling in a dream as a warning of a fall in life: pride or too bold a venture may cost you standing or good name. But whoever lands unhurt is promised by the old reading to weather the setback safely. Some elders also said that falling with a sudden jolt means only that the body is growing or settling into sleep.

Falling into a bottomless void
Plunging into an endless depth embodies the raw feeling of having lost all support and control. Psychologically it often appears in times of upheaval when there is no solid ground left underfoot. In Oriental reading a deep fall warns of a loss of standing or reputation, yet also cautions against letting fear paralyze you.
Falling from a building or roof
A tall building often stands for a hard-won position, a goal, or your own ambition. Falling from it mirrors the fear of crashing down from the heights you reached, of not being equal to your success, or of aiming too high. Traditionally it is read as a looming setback in some undertaking, best met with humility and caution.
Falling and jolting awake
The sudden fall at the threshold of sleep that yanks you back awake is a familiar bodily event (the hypnagogic jerk). Emotionally it often points to inner tension, suppressed vigilance, or difficulty truly letting go. It invites you to sense, in waking life, where you do not allow yourself to safely let go.
Falling down the stairs
A staircase in a dream stands for a step-by-step rise or descent, for development and stages of life. Falling down it can mirror the feeling of losing your footing in an orderly venture or forfeiting, step by step, what you worked hard to gain. Traditionally it cautions care during a transition better taken deliberately than in haste.
