Ψυχολογική (Φρόυντ)
Στη βαθυψυχολογία η γάτα ενσαρκώνει συχνά το πεισματικό, ανεξάρτητο θηλυκό και μια αισθησιακή, δυσπρόσιτη πλευρά της ψυχής. Όταν γρατζουνά ή παραμονεύει, μπορεί να καθρεφτίζει κρυφή μνησικακία ή τον φόβο της προδοσίας.
Ανατολίτικη ερμηνεία
Στην ανατολίτικη ερμηνεία, η γάτα συμβολίζει συνήθως ένα κλέφτικο ή πανούργο πρόσωπο μέσα στο σπίτι, που εξαπατά πίσω από ένα φιλικό πρόσωπο. Αντίθετα, μια ήμερη γάτα μπορεί να προμηνύει οικογενειακή ειρήνη και άνεση.
Λαϊκή (ονειροκρίτης)
By old folk belief the cat in a dream betokens false friends and secret scheming: to be scratched or bitten warns of betrayal or a quarrel stirred by a sly, two-faced person. A black cat that crosses your path has ever been held an ill omen, yet a purring, trusting cat promises peace within the home. Beware sweet words behind which claws lie hidden.

The black cat warns, in Oriental interpretation, of a secretive, cunning person in your close circle who acts behind your back. In depth psychology it embodies your hidden shadow – a trait you fear, yet one that holds power once you look at it.

Being scratched or bitten by a cat traditionally points to betrayal, illness, or quarrel through a trusted person who turns against you. Psychologically it is the painful backlash of a suppressed, willful instinct that refuses to be tamed any longer.
Many cats
A throng of cats warns in tradition of several false friends at once, or gossip circling you from many sides. Emotionally it mirrors a bundle of conflicting desires and moods within you, each clamouring at once for its own way and attention.
Friendly, purring cat
A softly purring, affectionate cat reverses the usual mistrust: it promises reconciliation with your own sensual, feminine nature and a loving, if headstrong, companion. Psychologically it invites you to finally embrace your independent, pleasure-loving side rather than fear it.
