By old folk reckoning a prison in your sleep is no welcome sign but foretells slander close at hand: wagging tongues will speak ill of you, and you may have to clear your name. Yet the old dream-books console that whoever sees himself behind bars will, against all expectation, keep his liberty, for such a dream turns fate on its head. To see another locked away promises that a long-carried burden is about to lift from your shoulders.

Being locked in prison yourself

Seeing yourself locked away usually mirrors a life situation that hems you in: a duty, a relationship, or a guilt you experience as a chain. In Ibn Sirin's tradition, one's own imprisonment often points to illness or a trial one must pass through in order to emerge freer.

Escaping from prison

Breaking out of prison is a powerful image of liberation: a part of you wants to finally throw off an old restriction, a suffocating environment, or self-imposed prohibitions. Traditionally, the escape signals recovery, the end of a hardship, or the resolution of a long-smouldering problem.

Visiting someone in prison

Visiting someone in prison turns your gaze outward: you are worried about a person stuck in a dead-end situation, or you feel partly responsible for their plight. Psychologically, the prisoner may also be a split-off, repressed part of yourself that you are cautiously approaching again.

Being released from prison

Release is the counter-image to confinement: a phase of anxiety, waiting, or inner paralysis is ending, and a new room for movement opens up. Traditionally, being set free heralds relief, the settling of a debt, or the return of health and zest for life.
