În psihologia profunzimilor, cuțitul dă adesea chip unei agresivități reprimate ori unei porniri ascuțite de a reteza o legătură ce a ajuns sufocantă. Tăișul lui poate oglindi deopotrivă o hotărâre ce se coace înlăuntrul visătorului, dorința de a tăia curat printr-o încâlceală lăuntrică.
Interpretare orientală
În tâlcuirea orientală și islamică a viselor, în duhul lui Ibn Sirin, cuțitul înseamnă de obicei tărie, ocrotire și un ajutor sau slujitor credincios. Un cuțit ascuțit și curat vestește drepturi păzite și putere dobândită, în vreme ce unul tocit ori rupt arată spre slăbiciune într-o pricină.

Folk belief holds the knife in a dream to be a sign of strife: it foretells quarrel, dispute and parting, for a knife 'cuts friendship in two.' A bright, sharp blade warns of an open exchange of words or a treacherous foe; a rusty or blunt one of vexation within the family. To give a knife as a gift has long been an ill omen that severs a bond, and so one lays a coin beside it to turn the mischief away.

Being threatened points to felt pressure or a hostile figure in waking life who is crossing your boundaries. Traditional lore warns of covert enmity and slander, while depth psychology reveals a sense of helplessness toward an aggression you have not yet learned to fend off.
Cutting yourself with a knife
Cutting yourself mirrors aggression turned inward or self-reproach that wounds you. Traditionally it warns of rash words that harm your own cause, while psychologically it points to the sharp self-criticism you carry and the need to treat yourself more gently.
Being given a knife
A knife received as a gift heralds, in Oriental lore, support, protection or a reliable ally who has your back. Some traditions read it as the birth of a son or fresh strength, while psychologically you are handed a tool to finally cut clean what no longer belongs together.
Stabbing someone with a knife
Stabbing someone surfaces pent-up rage or the wish to sever a relationship outright. The old teaching warns of a quarrel in which your words turn into blades, while depth psychology reads it as permission to finally face a repressed aggression rather than act it out.
