Din punct de vedere psihologic, o rudă decedată întrupează rareori moartea însăși, ci mai degrabă legătura lăuntrică ce dăinuie, doliul neprelucrat sau cuvintele rămase nerostite. Asemenea vise pot izvorî din dorința de a împlini un rămas-bun, de a desface o vină sau de a readuce la viață un îndrumător lăuntric.
Interpretare orientală
În tradiția orientală și islamică, un mort care apare mulțumit și senin este luat ca semn bun al stării sale și ca binecuvântare pentru cel ce visează, fiind adesea înțeles ca o rugăminte de rugăciune și milostenie. Dacă vorbește sau dăruiește ceva, cuvintelor sale li se atribuie deseori un înțeles adevărat și povățuitor.

By old folk reckoning a deceased relative comes in a dream as a messenger of warning or weather: if they speak, heed their words, for the elders held that the dead return to caution against danger or to call for reconciliation. In some country lore their appearance was likewise said to foretell a change of weather or coming rain.
