În psihologia profunzimilor, o mușcătură de șarpe se citește adesea ca izbucnirea bruscă a unor forțe instinctuale reprimate sau ca o întâlnire rănitoare ce prinde eul nepregătit. Șarpele însuși poartă o îndoită încărcătură de ispită și amenințare, astfel încât mușcătura poate atinge deopotrivă teama și dorința înăbușită.
Interpretare orientală
În tradiția lui Ibn Sirin, șarpele este adesea un dușman ascuns, iar mușcătura lui prevestește trădare ori vătămare venită de la cineva din preajmă. Unii tâlcuitori măsoară amploarea vrăjmășiei ce se apropie după asprimea mușcăturii, în vreme ce o mușcătură din care omul își revine poate arăta spre un atac respins.

The old folk dream-books read a snake bite as a sure token of secret enmity and slander: a false friend plots against you in silence, and gossip will soon reach your door. Where the serpent strikes, so they say, treachery lies waiting. Yet the grandmothers also whisper that whoever kills the adder in the dream shall overcome the foe and come out of the quarrel the stronger.

Snake bite on the hand
A bite to the hand strikes the very tool of your action and work: the dream warns of harm in business matters or betrayal by someone to whom you literally extended your hand. Psychologically it touches the fear that your own grasping has triggered a hidden, poisonous dynamic.
Snake bite on the foot
When the foot is bitten, it concerns your path and your progress: something or someone wants to stop a step you are about to take. The bite from below, often unseen in the grass, stands for a danger rising from the ground of your everyday life — from habits you have overlooked.
Snake bites but no venom
A bite without venom defuses the threat: an enemy or conflict bares its teeth, yet its power to truly harm you is limited. The dream suggests you will weather a confrontation or escape an apparent danger unscathed — the fright is greater than the damage.
Dying from a snake bite
Dying from the bite sounds terrifying but rarely means real death: it is the image of a profound ending — an old identity, a destructive bond, or a poisoned chapter of life coming irrevocably to a close. The traditional dread often gives way to the reading of a radical transformation from which something new is born.
