About the Art of Coffee-Ground Reading
Kahvebaktır brings together a centuries-old art of interpretation and careful image analysis. Here you can learn where this tradition comes from, how we read the signs, and which sources we rely on.
How we read
Every reading begins with the photos of your cup. The visible shapes – lines, figures, animals, signs – are read according to traditional symbolism: their place in the cup, their size and their neighbourhood determine the meaning. The interpretation is supported by modern image analysis but follows the rules of the classical schools, not chance.
Three schools, three perspectives
The same shape means different things in different traditions. We read according to three schools – the Ottoman-Persian, the Russian-Bulgarian and the German/Central-European – so you understand the cup from several perspectives. In the lexicon you will find every symbol in all three readings.
A note on interpretation

The reading traditions
Οθωμανικό-Περσικό
Ποιητικό και προσανατολισμένο στη μοίρα: χείλος = κοντινό μέλλον, πάτος = ρίζες· σημάδια όπως ο δρόμος (κισμέτ), το πουλί (νέα), το ψάρι (αφθονία).
Ρωσικό-Βουλγαρικό
Διαισθητικό και αφηγηματικό: μεγάλα καθαρά σχήματα = ισχυρές επιρροές· άλογο (ταξίδι), σκύλος (φίλος), δαχτυλίδι (γάμος), σταυρός (προσοχή).
Κεντροευρωπαϊκό
Οικείο και πρακτικό: γράμμα = νέα, σπίτι = εστία, δαχτυλίδι = γάμος, σκύλος = φίλος· από το βιεννέζικο καφενείο και τη λαϊκή παράδοση.
