Τα μαλλιά συμπυκνώνουν συχνά έννοιες ζωτικότητας, αισθησιασμού και ταυτότητας· το κόψιμο ή η απώλειά τους μπορεί να εκφράζει την επιθυμία για μεταμόρφωση όσο και τον φόβο της απώλειας δύναμης ή της αίσθησης του εαυτού. Στη βαθυψυχολογία τα μαλλιά αγγίζουν τη λιβιδινική ενέργεια και την εικόνα που θέλουμε να προβάλλουμε προς τα έξω.

Grey hair seen in sleep was said to promise honour and good standing in your later years.
