Ψυχολογικά, ο νεκρός συγγενής σπάνια ενσαρκώνει τον ίδιο τον θάνατο, αλλά μάλλον τη συνεχιζόμενη εσωτερική σχέση, το ανεπεξέργαστο πένθος ή τα λόγια που έμειναν ανείπωτα. Τέτοια όνειρα μπορεί να πηγάζουν από την επιθυμία να ολοκληρωθεί ένας αποχαιρετισμός, να λυθεί μια ενοχή ή να ζωντανέψει ξανά ένας εσωτερικευμένος οδηγός.

Στην ανατολίτικη και ισλαμική παράδοση, ένας νεκρός που εμφανίζεται ευχαριστημένος και ωραίος εκλαμβάνεται ως καλό σημάδι για την κατάστασή του και ως ευλογία για τον ονειρευόμενο· συχνά εννοείται ως παράκληση για προσευχή και ελεημοσύνη. By old folk reckoning a deceased relative comes in a dream as a messenger of warning or weather: if they speak, heed their words, for the elders held that the dead return to caution against danger or to call for reconciliation. In some country lore their appearance was likewise said to foretell a change of weather or coming rain.

Embracing a dead relative
Lovingly embracing a dead relative is a healing, often comforting image: it reflects the need for farewell, reconciliation and lasting connection. In the Oriental reading it is a good sign and may point to peace with the past and a grieving process that is finding its resolution.
