Потопът изобразява прелива на несъзнаваното — дълго задържани чувства, които пробиват всички бентове на самообладанието. Той може да действа едновременно разрушително и пречистващо и да известява вътрешен прелом, в който старото бива отнесено.
Ориенталско тълкуване
В ориенталско-ислямското тълкуване потопът често се вижда като сполетяване: война, размирици, тежко изпитание или наказание на несправедлив владетел. Ако водата обаче се оттегли мирно, той може да предвещава края на неволята и началото на облекчение.

By the old folk omen a flood in a dream heralds a wave of misfortune breaking over the house: turbid, muddy water brings cares, sickness or loss of goods, while clear water washes clean and promises blessing after the fright. Should the torrent sweep you off, beware of harm worked upon you by others. But if the waters seep away calmly into the ground, they say the hard time ebbs and peace returns.

Water flooding the house
When water rises into your own house, the overwhelming forces its way into your protected, private space: worry, outside influence or a family matter floods daily life. Traditionally it warns of a trial striking the home; psychologically, feelings break through exactly where you felt safest.
Swept away by the flood
To be swept away by the waters means losing control of your own life - carried by circumstance or emotion instead of steering yourself. Tradition reads it as a grave affliction; psychologically you are at the mercy of an inner current stronger than your will.
Watching the flood from afar
Watching the flood from a safe distance sets you apart from the calamity: you sense a crisis but are not (yet) caught in it. Traditionally it points to a trial befalling others or the community; psychologically you perceive a wave of strong feeling without yet being pulled in.
Floodwater receding
Receding floodwater is the consoling end of the symbol: the trial ebbs away, clarity and solid ground return. Traditionally it promises that hardship and strife are easing; psychologically you have weathered an emotional flooding and can now clear up what it left behind.
